- Company Of Heroes Strategy Guide
In my time on GameReplays.org I’ve seen a lot of people on the forums asking what they need to do in order to quickly improve at Company of Heroes. I myself had this exact question when I began playing online. No one likes to lose so naturally, people want to know how to be efficient with their Company Of Heroes playing time and only want to do what will help them improve the most during the time they invest. The goal of this article is to not only fully answer that question, but also to help you understand the importance behind the activities that will help you improve so you will be confident you’re using your time wisely. Hopefully this article will have some small positive impact on improving the overall quality of play in Company Of Heroes and the Gamereplays.org community, and the next time someone is asking how to improve they’ll be referred to this article and be better off as a result of it.
Core Step #1: Playing Auto-Matches
The most important thing to do when you want to improve at Company of Heroes is to play as many auto-matches as your schedule allows. In terms of playing Company of Heroes what are the alternatives to auto-matching? Well, you could play the Single Player Campaign, or you could play Skirmish matches against the computer, but this is not recommendable for a variety of reasons. You’re not overcoming a human brain that has the ability to adjust in game and make intelligent decisions. The artificial intelligence of a computer player is not a realistic representation of the strategies you’ll be facing against another real person. In almost every case playing against a human opponent is going to give you a better challenge and a greater opportunity to learn what is effective in online Company of Heroes competition. Playing the Single Player campaign or a skirmish match to improve your online Company of Heroes skills is like playing Basketball against a 4th grader when you’re trying to develop skills to compete at a professional level. It is not an effective way of learning.
Now you could theoretically practice build orders and using shortcut keys in a skirmish game, but why not practice those skills against another real opponent so you’re gaining experience in online Company of Heroes play at the same time? Playing auto-match is a much wiser method to improve your play. The only instance where skirmish is advisable is if you just want to play a game and de-stress without having to think about executing optimal strategy. If you want to admire the graphics of Company of Heroes or just have some fun that’s fine too. However, remember that we’re talking about improving our online Company of Heroes skills.
There are other alternatives to auto-match, but they too have their problems. Basic matches can give you the opportunity to play against another real person. However, there are some important reasons why Basic Matches aren’t as effective in helping you improve as auto-matches, the largest is that in a Basic Match your opponent could be a much lower level opponent than you or much higher. It’s more difficult to find an opponent of comparable skill in a Basic match than in an auto-match. Even though you are not always matched up with a player of the exact same caliber with auto-match, there is no doubt that you will find someone similar to your skill level much more often. So instead of winning easily or being destroyed without getting to mount any offense you will have the opportunity to test your skills against someone of a similar level.
Auto-match offers a much better environment to improve you play. In an auto-match you play someone of a similar skill level and as your skill increases so does that of your opponent. Auto-matches also give you something invaluable which is practical experience, that you can use to improve your online Company of Heroes skills. The players at the top of the leader board in almost every case have hundreds of games of experience across all of their online accounts. That means that they have come up against the majority of situations that you can encounter within a Company of Heroes game, a number of times. They’ve been able to change, adjust, and improve with the cumulative effect being that any situation that used to give them trouble no longer does and they’re able to quickly determine what the best available strategy is to succeed in a given situation. If you have hundreds of skirmishes when you step into an online Company of Heroes game that’s all well and good, but your previous experiences don’t amount to much because the success you’ve had came against a very small amount of situations provided by a predictable opponent. That kind of experience won’t serve you nearly as well against a harder to predict human adversary.
Core Step #2: Learning From Your Losses
You've started to play auto-matches on a regular basis so what is the next step? Review your losses, and more importantly have someone of a higher level help you review them. Why review losses instead of wins? In most cases you made more mistakes in your losses therefore your time is better spent correcting those mistakes as opposed to admiring your winning games. This is a big reason why it's important to have the proper attitude about losses. All they are is a great opportunity to improve and prevent future losses and that's how you have to look at them. Watching a quality replay has its benefits as well, but I’ll get into exactly how I use winning replays shortly.
Finding a player of a higher level to help you is not always easy. The best way to do this if you have the option is to participate in the Mentoring sessions that take place on a regular basis at Gamereplays.org. This is a great way to get one to two months of instruction from a player that is better than you. If a mentoring session is not currently going on, you can ask around and see if anyone is willing to mentor you, you can also Request A Replay Review, or you can post your losses in the strategy forum of the faction you’re playing as and ask for some advice from fellow players there. The Strategy Forums are also a great source of strategy guides and information about the Company Of Heroes factions. General, team, and operations strategies are also discussed.
Core Step #3: Correcting Your Mistakes
After you, or preferably a player with the skill level you wish to attain, has identified the mistakes that you made it’s important to work on implementing the advice you’re given during your subsequent auto-matches. The worst thing you can do is know what you’re doing wrong, but still fall into old habits and keep banging your head against a wall losing for the same reasons repeatedly. That wastes not only your time, but the time of the person that is helping you. If you have a lot of mistakes to work on and you become overwhelmed, just focus on the most important weakness to correct and work on it until it becomes a strength. After that you can move on to the next most important mistake you need to fix. You can even keep a list of all the mistakes you make regularly to help with this process. Eliminating mistakes takes time, but each one you get rid of moves you closer to your potential.
Supplementary Step #4: Learn from the Best
The previous three steps can help you improve a great deal on their own. Those are the “Three core steps” of improving at Company of Heroes. However, there are some other very good supplementary tips that you can do to further accelerate your improvement. The first of which is using the winning replays that I mentioned earlier. Not only watching your own, but Replays from the best players at Company of Heroes. You can learn a lot from evaluating you own replays, but when you watch a replay of one of the best players in the game at the top of the Company of Heroes online leader board there is certainly going to be many more positive examples that you could study and try to implement in your. In order to do this, one has to have a good understanding of the mechanics of Company of Heroes and what makes a top players game so effective. However, if you have been executing those 3 core steps you should be able to develop the familiarity with Company of Heroes needed to be successful in analyzing the strengths of top players. Shoutcasts, are also a great way to learn from the best players because they’re usually done by good players who are analyzing some of the best replays on GameReplays.org. Another way to learn from the Company Of Heroes experts is to ask questions of those experts who are generous enough to offer their time and answers in the Ask the Experts discussion thread.
Supplementary Step #5: Developing Your Company Of Heroes Intelligence
There are a number of great articles that you can learn from in the Company of Heroes Article Discussion forum. They cover a number of areas from the history of the game, to different aspects of play that are important to master. In addition to that there are a large number of great tips in the Tip of the Week archive that can help you become a better player just by implementing one tip at a time.
Supplementary Step #6: Knowing The Mechanics Of Company Of Heroes
